Breast Implant Removal Surgery Procedure Steps

Breast Implant Removal Surgery Procedure Steps

    Breast Implant Removal

cover upWomen who do not achieve satisfactory results from their breast augmentation surgery or suffer from post-surgical complications may require saline or silicone breast implant removal.

If the primary breast implantation was done incorrectly, the patient may need a revision surgery. The improper placement or scar tissue contraction can cause the breast implants to become displaced or constricted.

The procedure may also be required in cases where the implant has ruptured or deflated due to a defective implant or a breast tissue injury. If an infection occurs in the breast tissue (breast implant illness) it may be necessary to remove the implant. But this is a rare event.

Plastic surgeon Dr. Paul McCluskey provides breast implant removal to patients in Atlanta, Buckhead, Georgia, and surrounding communities.

    Procedure Steps

Before the plan for a breast implant removal surgery is finalized, the surgeon will evaluate the reasons for the implant complications and recommend an appropriate solution. If the patient chooses to have her saline or silicone implants replaced with a more suitable implant type, size, or texture, the replacement procedure will be performed at the same time with the removal of the old implants.

If the patient decides against implant replacement, the surgeon will recommend additional cosmetic surgery options, such as breast lift surgery, which can be performed at the time of breast implant removal. The surgeon will likely perform the procedure using general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. They will make an incision in one of the following areas to access the implant:

    • Under the armpits
    • Around the areola
    • Beneath the breast crease
    • In rare cases, through the navel

The incisions for breast implant removal will usually be placed in the same location as the ones placed during primary breast augmentation surgery. The surgeon will also remove the scar tissue along with the breast implants during this implant removal or replacement procedure. Scar tissue removal can be done using the en bloc capsulectomy technique or the regular explantation techniques.

    Removal of Saline Breast Implants

Before removing the implant, the surgeon will deflate it to allow for easier removal. Once the implant has been removed, the surgeon will excise the scar tissue from the original breast augmentation. New implant placement or breast lift surgery will be performed as soon as the original implant is removed. The surgery will take about one hour to complete. Following the procedure, the patient will have to remain under observation at the surgery center for a few hours.

    Removal of Silicone Breast Implants

If a damaged silicone implant goes undetected, it may pose some risk to the patient’s health. Therefore, the breast surgeon will examine the implant for any signs of rupture or distress prior to removing it during silicone implant removal or replacement surgery. This will reduce any risk related to the breast implant procedure.

    More Complex than Primary Implantation

The implant removal may be more complicated than the primary augmentation procedure, particularly in cases where the outer shell is textured or foam covered. Sometimes, the adjacent tissue and muscle may have to be removed along with the implant.

The total time taken to perform the removal procedure depends on whether other procedures are being undertaken at the same time. During the removal, the patient may also receive a breast lift, a scar revision, or breast implant replacement. It usually takes under an hour to remove silicone breast implants.

Breast Implant Removal Surgery Risks And Safety

    Breast Implant Removal Surgery

breastsBreast implant removal is a safe and proven solution for women who have suffered damage to their breast implants or those who may no longer have the same aesthetic preferences related to their implants.

Breast implant removal or replacement is an effective way to address these issues. However, similar to any other surgical procedure, breast implant removal has certain associated risks as well.

Breast implant removal surgery is usually more complex compared to the primary breast enlargement, whether it is performed in conjunction with a breast lift or an independent implant removal surgery. Plastic surgeon Dr. Paul McCluskey provides breast implant removal to patients in Atlanta, Buckhead, Georgia, and surrounding communities.

    Potential Complications

During the pre-operative consultation, the breast surgeon will explain the possible risks and complications to the patient. The patient, on her part, should be committed to follow the surgeon’s pre- and post-operative instructions in order to minimize the risks.

Breast implant removal may pose the following risks associated with any general surgery:

    • Adverse response to anesthesia
    • Bacterial infection
    • Unwanted cosmetic results
    • Conspicuous scarring
    • Bleeding risks

    Breast Implant Removal Risks

As an independent or standalone surgery, breast implant removal is a rather simple procedure. But it may have to be performed along with a breast lift to create optimal results. In a few cases, the patient may experience the following complications during or after a breast implant removal procedure:

    • Loss of sensation or changes in sensation in the nipple area
    • Asymmetrical breasts
    • Breast implant illness (rare occurrence)

The breasts may not look exactly the same as they did prior to breast augmentation surgery. Some sagginess or deformity of the breast tissue may occur, particularly if the patient had larger implants. A breast lift surgery along with a breast implant removal procedure would produce more successful cosmetic outcomes in such cases.

After the implant removal procedure, some patients may feel that their natural breasts appear smaller than what they remember their original breasts to be. This may occur due to hormonal fluctuations or weight loss that occurred when the patient originally received breast implants. It is vital for patients to have reasonable expectations from implant removal surgery for desirable outcomes.

    Breast Implant Replacement Risks

Breast implant replacement surgery involves similar risks as the original augmentation procedure. While rare, the following complications may develop after a breast implant replacement:

    • Shifting of the implant from its place
    • Implant rupture
    • Implant rippling
    • Capsular contracture
    • Changes in breast skin sensation

A woman seeking larger breast implants for her replacement surgery is likely to experience more discomfort as her body will take time to adjust to the new implants. The surgery to place larger implants will also be slightly more invasive and complex.

The surgeon will have to develop new breast pockets to accommodate the larger implants. They may also have to change the position of the implants. This could lead to a slight increase in the risks related to the surgery.

Any breast revision surgery will be associated with some degree of risks. Therefore, a patient should only consider this procedure if she is a solid candidate and the surgeon recommends it after considering all the pros and cons. Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Paul McCluskey receives patients from Atlanta, Buckhead, Georgia, and nearby areas for breast implant removal.

Your Breast Implant Removal Surgery Consultation

Your Breast Implant Removal Surgery Consultation | Atlanta | RoswellFor women who are unhappy with the final aesthetic outcome of their breast implant surgery, or those who experience post-surgical complications with implants may be candidates for saline or silicone breast implant removal surgery. This removal surgery could be medically advised if the primary breast augmentation was not performed correctly.

During the pre-op consultation, the surgeon will address all issues related to breast implant removal and reassure the patient about her concerns. Plastic surgeon Dr. Paul McCluskey provides breast implant removal to patients in Atlanta, Buckhead, Georgia, and surrounding communities.

    Goals and Expectations

During the consultation, the surgeon will try to understand the patient’s specific cosmetic goals and expectations from breast implant removal surgery. They will take these inputs into account while preparing a custom surgical plan to meet her unique needs.

To help the patient develop realistic expectations, the surgeon will encourage her to take a look at breast implant removal before and after photos of past patients. The surgeon will also advise the patient to decide about her surgery without any influence or pressure from someone else.

Well-informed patients are usually able to make a more enlightened decision on breast implant removal surgery and are likely to obtain higher levels of satisfaction as well.

    Implant Removal or Replacement

The surgeon will evaluate why the original breast implants developed complications and advise the patient on an appropriate course of action. If the patient chooses to have breast implant replacement, this procedure will be carried out at the same time with the breast implant removal surgery.

If the patient only wants her implants removed (without replacement), the surgeon may advise her additional options such as breast lift surgery. This procedure can be performed simultaneously with the breast implant removal surgery. Before the surgery, the surgeon will evaluate the implants and the surrounding tissue for leakage, inflammation, infection, and rupture.

    Candidacy for En Bloc Capsulectomy

A priority for the surgeon during a breast implant removal consultation is establishing the patient as a candidate for this procedure. The surgeon will perform a general medical examination and assess the breast anatomy, skin texture, and elasticity. They will also try to determine whether a full or partial capsulectomy or an en bloc capsulectomy may be the most appropriate technique of breast implant removal for the patient.

In addition, the surgeon will evaluate the medical and surgical history of the patient and may order medical tests, if required. They will incorporate the aesthetic goals of the patient into the breast surgery plan.

    Pre-op Instructions

During the consultation, the surgeon will give clear instructions about refraining from smoking for a certain time period prior to the surgery. A few prescription or non-prescription medications and supplements may also be temporarily stopped or their schedules altered in consultation with the physician.

    Questions to Ask

The patient should ideally prepare a comprehensive list of questions that they wish to ask from the surgeon during the consultation. The patient may also request for access to testimonials of past patients to learn about their experience with the surgeon. Some patients may also like to talk to the staff members and take a tour of the office to increase their familiarity with the practice.

    Breast Implant Removal Surgery Cost

Breast Implant Removal Surgery Cost | Atlanta Plastic Surgery | RoswellWomen who are dissatisfied with the results of their primary breast augmentation surgery or the ones who may develop implant complications later on may require breast implant removal.

During the pre-operative consultation, the surgeon will discuss all aspects of breast implant removal surgery with the patient, including the estimated cost. Plastic surgeon Dr. Paul McCluskey provides breast implant removal to patients in Atlanta, Buckhead, Georgia, and surrounding locations.

    Cost Variations

The sticker price of breast implant removal surgery may differ between patients based on the complexity of the procedure. At times, implant removal surgery may be more complicated than the original breast augmentation. As a result, it could cost more than the primary surgery.

If there was an error on the surgeon’s part when the original implantation was done, they may choose to perform the implant removal surgery at a rebate or at no cost to the patient. The patient should understand the policies of the particular practice regarding revision procedures before proceeding with a breast implant procedure.

The implant removal surgery cost will also depend on whether the patient needs implant replacement. A breast implant removal without replacement typically involves breast lift surgery as an additional procedure, which will lead to a higher procedure financial impact.

If the patient chooses to undergo an implant replacement, the procedure will include the costs of new implants. If the implants were damaged within the warranty period, the implant manufacturer may provide a free replacement.

Breast Implant Removal with a Breast Lift

Breast implants can stretch the skin tissue over time, causing sagging breasts. Patients who wish to restore their natural breast appearance at a later stage may require a breast lift in conjunction with implant removal.

This procedure should only be undertaken by an experienced cosmetic surgeon for desirable results after the implant removal. If the patient undergoes the breast implant removal along with a breast lift, the fees of the surgeon and other costs related to the surgical venue and recovery may be marginally higher.

    Additional Cost Factors

Depending on their geographical location, breast implant removal cost may differ from one practice to another. The real estate and overhead costs are often higher in major destinations, busy urban centers, and cities along the coast. In these areas, the average cost of products and services will be higher, including the cost of plastic surgery services.

If the procedure is performed using general anesthesia, the breast implant removal costs will include the fees of an anesthesiologist or a certified anesthetic nurse. The charges will vary according to the experience and qualification of these medical professionals.

The breast implant removal surgery may be performed at an accredited surgical center, a private surgical suite, or a hospital. The costs and benefits associated with each option will be different.

The breast implant removal procedure also involves pre and post-surgical expenses, such as those pertaining to prescription drugs, medical exam, mammograms, follow-up appointments, and surgical accessories. These expenses may look minor at the outset, but they can add up to a significant amount and should be included as a part of the cost estimate.

What is an En bloc Capsulectomy Breast Implant Removal?

What is an En bloc Capsulectomy Breast Implant Removal? | AtlantaPatients can seek the removal of their breast implants for a variety of reasons.  You may no longer want a large breast size and prefer to return to your original aesthetic breast size or there might be medical reasons such as an implant malfunction.

You can choose to remove your breast implants with an en bloc capsulectomy. This surgical procedure has been performed successfully over the years. Plastic surgeon Dr. Paul McCluskey provides breast implant removal to patients in Atlanta, Buckhead, Georgia, and surrounding locations.

    What is En Bloc Capsulectomy?

En bloc capsulectomy is a surgical procedure that will remove a part or the entire breast implant capsule. This procedure is usually performed after the patient has developed complications from a previous surgery, or she desires to have the implants extracted from her body.

The en bloc capsulectomy removes both the implant and the capsule simultaneously. This allows the tissue and the muscles of the breast to settle back to their previous position for a more natural looking appearance.

En bloc is sometimes referred to as a total capsulectomy. While both types of surgical techniques involve the removal of the breast implant and a part, or the entire the capsule that surrounds the breast, they are not the same procedure.

    Types of Capsulectomy

En bloc, a French term means “as a whole”. As the name suggests, an “en bloc capsulectomy” refers to the removal of the entire breast implant along with the scar tissue capsule as a single unit. The cosmetic surgeon makes an incision around this entity with the capsule enclosing the implant and removes it without causing any damage to the body.

This surgical procedure makes sure that the silicone stays inside the capsule while being removed. This prevents the bacteria and the chemicals from leaking inside the patient’s body without causing any contamination to the body.

Partial capsulectomy, or a capsulectomy  is a technique that corrects capsular contracture and takes out only part of the scar tissue.

Total capsulectomy eliminates the entire scar tissue, together with the tissue around the implant along the lungs and the ribs. In this procedure the surgeon will first remove the implants and then take out the entire capsule tissue.

Partial capsulotomy can be done as an opened or closed surgery. The open procedure involves the capsule being partially or completely removed through an incision within the area of the breast. In the closed surgical procedure the surgeon will break down the capsule tissue while leaving the implant in place. This approach has the possibility of rupturing the breast implant.

    Benefits of En Bloc Capsulectomy

This surgical technique offers several benefits:

    • You are more comfortable in your own skin
    • You can feel the natural softness of your breasts
    • Improved streamline silhouette and form
    • You can switch to more comfortable bras
    • You can easily participate in several strenuous activities
    • Better sleep positions
    • Transformed and better body image

How do I Know if I am a Suitable Candidate?

Any woman who wishes to change her breast implants and is in good overall health is an ideal candidate for the en bloc capsulectomy. There are several reasons why you can consider an en bloc capsulectomy surgery:

    • Not satisfied with the appearance of your breasts
    • Shifting and asymmetry of the existing implant
    • Medical complications from having scar tissue around the breast Implant
    • Deposits of calcium in the breasts
    • Deflation or rupture of an implant
    • A breast cancer diagnosis

Choosing The Best Plastic Surgeon to Remove Your Breast

Choosing The Best Plastic Surgeon to Remove Your Breast | AtlantaIt is difficult to find a cosmetic surgeon who can efficiently accomplish your explant surgery because it can be a more complex procedure than breast implants. If you have already had an undesirable experience with your breast implant procedure, it is essential to look for a surgeon that can remove your implants judiciously.

Your surgeon should be able to reduce any silicone leakage or handle any other problem during the surgery effectively.

You should try to look for a surgeon who understands that the breast implant procedure can at times cause severe health problems. These surgeons will be more cautious during your implant removal surgery. Plastic surgeon Dr. Paul McCluskey provides breast implant removal to patients in Atlanta, Buckhead, Georgia, and surrounding locations.

    En Bloc Removal

It is vital to find an explant surgeon who has experience in en bloc removal. En bloc removal is a procedure where your surgeon will remove the scar tissue (or capsule) and the implant simultaneously, with the implant still inside the intact scar tissue capsule. This matters if your implants are damaged, filled with silicone gel, or are quite old.

The surgical procedure ensures that the silicone and other chemicals stay inside the intact scar tissue capsule when it is removed. En block removal stops bacteria silicone and other chemicals from leaking into the patient’s body during surgery. It requires a larger cut (which results in a larger scar), but it is worth it because it checks leakage that can cause a number of health problems.

You should remember that en bloc removal may not be feasible in all cases, and your cosmetic surgeon may not know if this procedure can be performed until you are in surgery. For instance, this procedure is not possible if your scar tissue capsule is extremely thin or is attached tightly to your chest wall.

Are You a Good Candidate for Breast Implant Removal?

Are You a Good Candidate for Breast Implant Removal? | AtlantaAt any stage after their breast enhancement procedure, a woman may consider breast implant removal surgery due to cosmetic, emotional, and health reasons. It is vital for women seeking a breast implant removal procedure to be in decent overall health and not be pregnant or nursing.

Plastic surgeon Dr. Paul McCluskey provides breast implant removal to patients in Atlanta, Buckhead, Georgia, and surrounding locations.

    Removal due to Unsuitable Implants

The primary breast augmentation cosmetic surgery may not always offer outcomes that are satisfactory for the patients. This may happen due to a variety of reasons, such as inappropriate implant size, shape, or type.

In exceptional cases, following the implant surgery, the woman may feel that she was more satisfied with her primary breast shape, or that the new bigger implants are impeding her ability to perform specific tasks.

Women experiencing such problems may be good candidates for breast implant removal surgery. Sometimes the woman may be unhappy with the size, shape, or type of her breast implants.

The patient may find that the implants are excessively large or too small, or the shape or profile may be undesirable to her. Breast implant removal surgery may be an appropriate option for such women. At times, the patient may decide to get a new, more suitable implant after implant removal.

The FDA approved silicone breast implants a few years after saline implants received approval. Some patients may decide to undergo saline implant removal and subsequent replacement of those with silicone implants.

    Surgical Complications requiring Removal

A woman may sometimes experience complications associated with breast implants after her breast augmentation plastic surgery. This may occur at any time after the procedure.

The risk of complications is significantly reduced in the hands of a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon. However, complications may still occur, even after the primary procedure.

Capsular contracture develops when the scar tissue around the implant becomes tighter. To address this condition, the patient will need to undergo scar tissue or implant removal.

On top of this, they may choose to undergo implant replacement following the removal procedure. Implants may rupture, leak, or deflate due to natural wear and tear or a defect in the implant.

Hormonal changes, or the thinning of skin across the breasts may cause implant rippling. At times, the breast implant may move from its original placement, causing a lop-sided look. Patients with this condition will need to undergo breast implant surgery.

Other Candidates for Breast Implant Removal

In addition, there are other reasons for which breast implant removal surgery may be undertaken. A cancer diagnosis may require the patient to undergo breast implant removal to ensure that cancer treatment can be more effective. Changes in aesthetic preferences or lifestyles may also prompt some women to seek breast implant removal surgery.

In case the primary breast implant placement was performed inaccurately, it may be necessary for the patient to undergo implant revision surgery. Incorrect placement or strain from scar tissue can cause breast implants to become displaced or constricted.

The procedure may be necessary if the implants rupture or deflate due to an injury or a defective implant. In case of an infection, breast implants may also need to be removed. Plastic surgeon Dr. Paul McCluskey provides breast implant removal to patients in Atlanta, Buckhead, Georgia, and surrounding communities.

What happens during breast implant removal surgery?

Before breast implant revision surgery, the surgeon will assess the reasons for the breast enhancement complications and recommend a course of treatment to the patient. In case the patient decides to have silicone or saline breast implants with a more suitable implant type, the replacement procedure will be performed during the breast implant removal surgery.

If the patient chooses to undergo breast implant replacement, the surgeon will advise them about additional cosmetic surgery options such as a breast lift, which can be performed simultaneously with the revision surgery.

The surgeon will likely perform the procedure using general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. The surgeon will place an incision in one of the following sites to access the implants:

    • Around the areola
    • Right underneath the armpit
    • Under the breast fold
    • In rare cases, through the navel

The incisions for breast implant removal are usually the same as the ones placed during the original breast augmentation surgery. The surgeon will typically also remove scar tissue along with the breast implant during this surgery.

    Saline Breast Implant Removal

The surgeon may deflate the implant before removing it during saline revision surgery to allow easier removal. Following the implant removal, the surgeon will eliminate scar tissue from the primary augmentation procedure.

New implant placement or breast lift surgery will be performed immediately after the implant removal. The surgery takes between 30 to 45 minutes to complete. Following the procedure, the patient will remain in the hospital for a few hours for observation.

    Silicone Breast Implant Removal

It is possible for a ruptured silicone implant to go undetected. Therefore, the surgeon will manually examine the implant for any signs of damage or rupture prior to removing it during silicone revision surgery. This minimizes any risks related to the breast implant procedure.

Implant removal may be more complicated than the primary enhancement procedure, particularly when the outer shell is textured or foam covered. Sometimes the surgeon may have to remove the surrounding tissue and muscles in addition to the implant.

The time taken to complete the removal surgery depends on whether other procedures are being undertaken at the same time. During the removal, the patient can also receive breast implant replacement, scar revision, or a breast lift. It typically takes under one hour to remove silicone breast implants.
