    Cosmetic Rhinoplasty Procedures

    Cosmetic Rhinoplasty Procedures

Cosmetic Rhinoplasty Procedures | Atlanta | Buckhead | RoswellVarious techniques can be used to perform rhinoplasty cosmetic surgery, depending on the patient’s unique anatomical and aesthetic needs.

At the time of the pre-operative consultation, the nose reshaping surgeon will establish the candidacy of the patient for a specific type of cosmetic rhinoplasty procedure.

Plastic surgeon Dr. Paul McCluskey provides rhinoplasty to patients in Atlanta, Buckhead, Georgia, and surrounding locations.

    Reduction Rhinoplasty

Reduction rhinoplasty is a commonly used nose reshaping technique. This procedure makes the nose more proportionate to the other features of the face. It is a suitable procedure for patients with nasal issues such as a bump on the nasal bridge, excessively flared nostrils, and an elongated nose tip.

In this procedure, the surgeon will remove tiny fragments of bone and cartilage to achieve aesthetically desirable results. Furthermore, the surgeon may use a technique called alar base reduction to shrink the nostrils. They will remove tiny amounts of tissue from the area where the cheek and nostrils connect while performing the alar base reduction.

    Augmentation Rhinoplasty

Another major rhinoplasty plastic surgery technique is augmentation rhinoplasty. In this procedure, the surgeon will graft bone or tissue to develop the nasal tip and/or bridge. Sometimes the surgeon uses cartilage sourced from other nasal areas such as the septum.

However, if the patient has insufficient tissue in this area, the surgeon may use cartilage from other body areas, rib bone, synthetic materials, and other forms of biological tissue.

    Post-Traumatic Rhinoplasty

For patients with nose injuries, a post-traumatic rhinoplasty may be an appropriate procedure. This procedure can improve the functionality as well as the appearance of the nose. This surgery can correct crooked noses and address issues in the nasal septum.

In many cases, patients of traumatic facial injuries suffer from broken noses. The surgeon may need to re-fracture the nose in such cases. Afterwards, they will reset the nose to attain desirable outcomes. A surgeon can usually set a basic nose fracture within a ten-day period after the injury.

    Reconstructive Rhinoplasty

Reconstructive rhinoplasty is an appropriate procedure for patients who have lost their entire nose or a part of it to skin cancer, accidents, or another serious illness.

This treatment involves the surgeon rebuilding the nose through approaches such as skin grafts, flap techniques, and various other innovative procedures. This is a complex process in which the patient may need numerous surgeries over a few months.

    Ethnic Rhinoplasty

Ethnic rhinoplasty also involves the use of the same techniques as other types of nose surgeries. People of African American, Afro-Caribbean, Hispanic, Middle-Eastern, and Asian lineage often seek ethnic rhinoplasty.

Individuals from these ethnicities usually have softer nasal contours. In this procedure, the surgeon will ensure that the integrity of the ethnic face remains undisturbed.

    Adolescent Rhinoplasty

Doctors recommend that most teenage patients should wait until their nose is completely developed before undergoing nose reshaping surgery. Some exceptions are cases where the teen patient is experiencing breathing challenges or has undergone trauma.

Surgeons make sure that they protect the delicate nasal features of the teen patient during this surgery. In addition, the surgeon must determine that the teenager is psychologically and emotionally ready for nose surgery.

Cosmetic Rhinoplasty – Correcting The Radix

Cosmetic Rhinoplasty - Correcting The Radix | Atlanta | BuckheadRhinoplasty surgery usually involves reducing a dorsal hump or bump on the nasal bridge. Sometimes a variation of this condition can create the illusion of a significant bump, called the low radix or pseudo-hump.

The radix is the upper bony portion of the nose. The radix and the cartilage beneath it may be substantial leading to the appearance of a bump. If the radix is shallow, it can cause the appearance of a depression and a bump. The cosmetic surgeon can carefully shave away small portions of the radix to reduce its size.

They may also graft a portion of the patient’s cartilage taken from another location in the nose to add fullness to a depressed area of the nose. By augmenting the space right above the radix, the surgeon can create a straighter slope.

Proper radix management is essential to develop a natural nasal appearance. Plastic surgeon Dr. Paul McCluskey provides rhinoplasty to patients in Atlanta, Buckhead, Georgia, and surrounding locations.

    Pseudo-Hump

A pseudo-hump refers to a nose where the radix is not sufficiently developed and under-projects. This helps create a facial profile in which the tissue beneath the radix (towards the nasal tip) seems even larger than it really is. A pseudo-hump develops when the bone of the radix does not project the overlying soft tissue properly.

Correcting an Underdeveloped and Low Radix

For an under-projecting radix, rhinoplasty with radix tissue grafting is the most appropriate procedure. Fascia, cartilage, or other tissue can comprise a radix graft.

In general, the surgeon uses a carved piece of cartilage (usually taken from the septum) for a radix graft. They will then place this graft beneath the skin and muscle of the radix where it remains properly hidden.

The surgeon will address the deficit in the bony structure by placing the cartilage graft over the bone where it raises the sunken soft tissue. This procedure helps develop a much straighter profile without the requirement to remove any underlying bone or cartilage from the radix.

Can you have Weak Radix and a True Hump?

It is possible for a patient to have an under-developed radix along with a true hump. The benefit of treating both these conditions at the same time is that the surgeon can undertake a more conservative approach to hump removal.

In such procedures, the surgeon brings the ideal profile line closer to the hump while elevating the position of the radix. As a result, the surgeon will have to eliminate a lesser portion of the hump to develop a straighter profile. The results of this surgery appear less “surgical” and more natural looking because of a stronger nasal starting point.

Correcting Radix as Part of Revision Rhinoplasty

The angle between the frontal and nasal bones in the nose determines the height of the radix. This height should be in proportion to the dorsal height, length, and tip projection to develop beautiful, harmonious outcomes.

The nose may appear Romanesque after the surgery if the radix remains too high, or if the radix graft used for the procedure is too substantial. In revision rhinoplasty, the surgeon reduces the radix to its right and most appropriate proportions relative to other nasal aspects and the overall shape of the face.

Cosmetic Rhinoplasty – Tip Rotation And Reduction

Cosmetic Rhinoplasty - Tip Rotation And Reduction | Atlanta | RoswellIf the nasal tip lacks definition or is overly defined, it may not have a proper rotation. The upward or downward turn of the nasal tip is known as rotation.

The cosmetic surgeon will reshape the cartilage to modify the nasal tip. They will pay close attention to the base of the nose during this procedure as it affects the tension and rotation.

Plastic surgeon Dr. Paul McCluskey provides rhinoplasty to patients in Atlanta, Buckhead, Georgia, and surrounding communities.

    What is Nose Tip Rhinoplasty?

Any surgical procedure undertaken on the lower third part of the nose is known as nasal tip rhinoplasty. This is a complex procedure where the nose surgeon should be experienced and skilled in rhinoplasty and have a deep understanding of the nose structure as well as how the cartilage and other tissue impacts the process of nose reshaping.

Nasal tip refinement is not necessarily a cosmetic surgery. In some cases, it may be a medical necessity. For example, at times, the patient may experience breathing problems due to the abnormal shape of their nasal tip either in their routine life or when sleeping.

A sinus infection could also develop due to an abnormal nose tip. At times, patients may also experience speech impediments due to their abnormal nasal tip.

    Reasons to Undergo Tip Refinement

Patients seek nasal tip refinement, either individually or as an alternative to rhinoplasty, for multiple reasons. But it is typically undertaken to correct a “bulbous” or fuller nasal tip.

Certain patients may find their natural nose structure to be unattractive, such as patients with “hooked” noses, noses that sag at the tip, or upturned noses. Nasal tip refinement offer creates a slimming appearance for the face in general.

    Wide Tip Correction

A wide or bulbous nose usually occurs due to a combination of thick nose skin and large nasal domes that are spaced apart widely. A thick ligament or fat may separate the nasal domes in many cases.

The surgeon will modify the soft tissue and move the domes closer to treat this condition. They may place a graft on the nasal tip itself for patients who have thick skin as this will give the nasal tip better definition. The surgeon can also trim off or tweak the cartilage structure underneath the skin to make the nasal tip narrow.

    Less Invasive Procedure

In comparison to a complete nose job, the nasal tip refinement surgery is much less invasive. The inner nasal structure undergoes substantial modification in a typical rhinoplasty. This may involve fracturing bones which will lead to a more extended recovery period.

However, nasal tip refinement typically involves two to three incisions which allow the surgeon to access the cartilage in that site. The surgeon will close the incisions after reshaping the nose. Furthermore, this procedure involves a relatively brief recovery period.

If a patient is an ideal candidate for tip refinement surgery, it can typically provide an effective alternative to “complete” rhinoplasty surgery. Plastic surgeon Dr. Paul McCluskey receives patients from Atlanta, Buckhead, Georgia, and nearby areas for rhinoplasty.

Cosmetic Rhinoplasty – Straightening a Crooked Nose

Cosmetic Rhinoplasty - Straightening a Crooked Nose | AtlantaPatients with a nose that is slightly crooked or shifted to one side can consider a procedure to straighten. In this procedure, the surgeon eliminates some bone or cartilage or physically moves the tissue.

Similar to a broken nose after functional rhinoplasty, the cosmetic surgeon may also place a splint to hold the nose in position as it heals.

The reason for the crookedness may determine if it is very subtle or quite visible. Crooked noses are typically only an aesthetic problem. But in certain cases, it can have an impact on a person’s breathing. Plastic surgeon Dr. Paul McCluskey provides rhinoplasty to patients in Atlanta, Buckhead, Georgia, and surrounding locations.

    Causes for Nose Crookedness

Before considering treatment options, it is vital to understand the reasons for the nose crookedness. There are two main types of crooked noses. One type of crookedness occurs because of an issue within the complex system of cartilage, tissue, and bones that make up the nose.

The various reasons which may cause this condition include:

    • Birth defects
    • Injuries, such as a fractured nose
    • Severe infections
    • Tumors
    • Nose surgery

The reason for the crookedness will determine if the nose is C-, I-, or S-shaped.

A septal deviation is the reason for the other type of nose crookedness. The septum is the internal wall that divides the nasal cavity into two identical airways. A deviated septum causes this wall to lean to one side which partially obstructs one nasal airway. While some individuals are born with a deviated septum, others develop it due to an injury.

Along with making the nose appear crooked, a deviated septum can lead to the below mentioned conditions:

    • Loud breathing
    • Problems sleeping on one side
    • Nosebleeds

A qualified doctor can determine the reason for the crooked nose and identify the most suitable course of treatment to correct it.

    Surgical Treatment

A slightly crooked nose may be straightened using dermal fillers. But more severe cases will usually need plastic surgery. Rhinoplasty surgery helps address cosmetic problems of the nose while septoplasty straightens that wall that divides the inside of the nose into two passageways.

    Rhinoplasty

The two types of rhinoplasty procedures are cosmetic rhinoplasty and functional rhinoplasty. Cosmetic rhinoplasty only focuses on correcting the appearance of the nose. Conversely, functional rhinoplasty helps address breathing problems.

According to a 2015 study, rhinoplasty can successfully straighten crooked noses in patients with or without facial symmetry, regardless of the technique used. Facial symmetry refers to the similar appearance between both halves of the face.

    Septoplasty

Septoplasty reshapes the wall between the nasal passageways to straighten a crooked nose. For patients with a crooked nose due to a deviated septum, septoplasty us likely a suitable procedure. This surgery can straighten the nose and relieve obstructions in the nasal airways due to a septal deviation.

    The Bottom Line

A crooked nose is a commonly occurring condition which can develop due to nasal trauma or a deviated septum. Around 80 percent of individuals have some form of a deviated septum. If their crooked nose is leading to breathing issues or major cosmetic concerns, the patient should consider an appropriate treatment option.

    Rhinoplasty Surgery: Nasal Fractures

Rhinoplasty Surgery: Nasal Fractures | Atlanta | Buckhead | RoswellNose fractures comprise nearly 40 percent of bone injuries in cases of facial trauma. The treatment commences with primary care which involves evaluating the extent of the injury, correctly understanding the cause of the injury, and determining the nasal and facial state before the injury.

A rhinoplasty cosmetic surgeon can provide a suitable treatment for nasal fractures.

There are various types of nasal fractures. These fractures may cause breathing obstructions, and a deformed or crooked nose if left untreated. Fractures can occur at any place in the “bony pyramid” of the nose. This refers to the pyramid-like, bony structure that extends from the face.

The rejoining or resetting of the bones involves different types of osteotomy for different fractures. Plastic surgeon Dr. Paul McCluskey provides rhinoplasty to patients in Atlanta, Buckhead, Georgia, and surrounding locations.

    Greenstick Fractures

This fracture occurs along the nasal bone edges. Greenstick fractures often happen in children whose fragile bones are developing and are extremely flexible. For this reason, these kinds of fractures are typically partial rather than fully broken bones.

    Saddle Deformity

This is a more serious type of fracture which causes the bridge and septum of the nose to collapse becoming conclave into the face. This leads to a saddle-like shape which is obvious when the face is viewed in profile.

The reasons for this condition include acute facial trauma or disintegration of cartilage due to snorting drugs such as cocaine. To treat these types of cases, the surgeon will source rib bone tissue from a donor or cartilage to restore the septum and bridge.

    Comminuted Fracture

This type of fracture occurs when a bone breaks down into three or more fragments. The surgeon will eliminate the extra bone fragments which may lead to severe complications if left untreated. The nasal bones will also be aligned. This condition is standard for severe injuries or in older patients with weakened bones.

    Le Fort Fractures

In some cases, serious injury can cause damage to the bones behind the nose (maxillae). The maxillae consist of two bones that form the palate and upper jaw and offer support to the structures of the nose. These fractures are known as Le Fort fractures and are classified into three categories.

Le Fort I fracture happens in a horizontal position causing damage to the jaw and nostril line. Le Fort II fractures lead to damage to the maxillae beneath the sockets of the eyes around the bridge of the nose.

A Le Fort II fracture leads to damage to the bones in a pyramid-like shape. This fracture goes from the nasal bridge to the corners of the mouth in an inverted V-shape. Le Fort III fractures involve damage to the orbital sockets or the bones around the eyes.

Le Fort fractures are a serious condition. They require prompt treatment as they can lead to long-term damage to the brain and the palate. An experienced plastic surgeon can treat these fractures through a rhinoplasty procedure.

What can I Expect if I get Pregnant after Liposuction?

What can I Expect if I get Pregnant after Liposuction? | AtlantaThe new body shape will be more or less permanent after liposuction. If the patient puts on a moderate amount of weight following the procedure, their figure will simply become a slightly bigger version of their new body shape.

Plastic surgeon Dr. Paul McCluskey provides liposuction to patients in Atlanta, Buckhead, Georgia, and surrounding locations.

    Pregnancy Effects following Liposuction Surgery

Certain women may be concerned about their liposuction surgery effects if they conceive in the future. In general, patients can feel confident that pregnancy will not permanently change the body contouring results attained with liposuction.

In case a woman receives liposuction and becomes pregnant subsequently, gives birth, and then loses the excess weight gained during the pregnancy, her original liposuction outcomes will return. In most cases, it will appear as if she not been through a post-lipo pregnancy at all.

But female liposuction candidates should understand that their ideal objective should be to select a cosmetic surgery procedure when they do not have plans to become pregnant in the future. Pregnancy can cause cellulite, stretch marks, and loose skin in the breast, abdominal, thigh, and butt areas. These cosmetic concerns are not related to liposuction.

Liposuction is a procedure for fat reduction and body sculpting, which will improve the shape and figure of the patient. However, it does not significantly affect the quality of skin texture, eliminate stretch marks or cellulite, or tighten loose skin.

    Liposuction after Final Pregnancy

Some women may develop stubborn fatty pockets in the abdominal area because of numerous pregnancies.

If a candidate decides to undergo liposuction after her last baby, she can expect an excellent improvement in the abdomen shape. Patients may be able to avoid the more invasive tummy tuck procedure and attain a flatter and more youthful looking abdomen with liposuction following their last pregnancy.

    Permanent Fat Cell Reduction

Liposuction cosmetic surgery removes fat cells, and once these cells are eliminated, they cannot re-grow. The human body does not typically generate new fat cells after puberty, even if the person puts on a moderate amount of weight. This means that whatever fat cells are removed with liposuction will be eliminated forever.

If the patient does not gain excessive amount of weight following pregnancy, her slimmer, new figure attained with liposuction will be permanent. But the patient should understand that the fat cells that still remain in the body following lipo can grow bigger in size if she puts on a serious amount of weight.

On top of this, the natural process of aging over the years leads to normal changes in the body shape. However, they can be assured that the cosmetic advantages of liposuction will always be visible as long as they follow a balanced diet and exercise regimen.

Eating lots of food that is not healthy and not exercising properly can easily negate the effects of liposuction.

When do the Outcomes become Visible?

A majority of patients will be able to attain 90 percent of their final liposuction results in around three months after the surgery. The post-op inflammation will resolve slowly over several months depending on the extent of surgery and the type of liposuction technique used.

After the inflammation resolves fully, the complete results of the liposuction will become apparent. Plastic surgeon Dr. Paul McCluskey receives patients from Atlanta, Buckhead, Georgia, and nearby areas for liposuction.

How Much Weight Can I Lose by Liposuction?

How Much Weight Can I Lose by Liposuction? | Atlanta | BuckheadFor the past three decades, liposuction has consistently ranked among the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures in the US.

This procedure can improve the contours of the targeted body areas by eliminating excess fatty deposits that do not respond diet and exercise.

New patients may have concerns on whether liposuction surgery can help them lose weight and to what extent. Patients should unhesitatingly ask such questions during the pre-op consultation process to be able to make a well-considered decision after garnering complete clarity on the potential advantages and limitations of liposuction.

A dedicated surgeon will answer any questions that the patient may have in a comprehensive and detailed way to enable them to make a well-informed choice. Plastic surgeon Dr. Paul McCluskey provides liposuction to patients in Atlanta, Buckhead, Georgia, and surrounding locations.

Fat Loss vs. Weight Loss Procedures

Many patients are unclear on the difference between fat loss and weight loss procedures, and consider the two to be synonymous.

However, a fat loss procedure helps eliminate stubborn fatty pockets in particular sites of the body which may be creating unappealing bulges and affecting the contours of the body.

A weight loss procedure, on the other hand, helps obese or overweight people who may be facing weight-related medical issues such as hypertension or diabetes. Bariatric surgery is an effective medical procedure to help suitable candidates reduce a large amount of body weight.

Liposuction, unlike bariatric surgery, is a fat loss procedure which can be performed in one or more parts of the body to improve contours. The development of state-of-the-art techniques has now made liposuction a less invasive body contouring surgery.

Furthermore, patients do not need to follow a strict diet plan after liposuction, unlike in the case of weight loss procedure.

    Liposuction Makes You Look Slimmer

Liposuction helps reshape the body by removing fatty deposits. But it is not a procedure meant for weight loss. While weight loss is relatively easier to accomplish through diet and exercise, fatty deposits in particular areas are challenging to eliminate even through proper diet and a vigorous exercise regimen.

Liposuction targets specific areas of the body to enhance the contours making a person appear slimmer. It may seem like the patient has lost weight, but in reality, liposuction eliminates only undesirable fat cells.

    Fat Loss is Permanent

Liposuction cosmetic surgery does not cause dramatic weight loss. However, patients can be assured of permanent fat loss. The adult body cannot restore fat cells after they have been eliminated. If the patient puts on more weight over a period of time, their body will appear as a larger version of the new body shape accomplished through liposuction.

This happens because the remaining fat cells in the body will grow larger if the patient puts on weight. For maintaining the benefits of liposuction in the long-term, patients should follow a balanced diet and exercise program following the surgery.

Plastic surgeon Dr. Paul McCluskey receives patients from Atlanta, Buckhead, Georgia, and nearby areas for liposuction.

What Happens if I Gain Weight after Liposuction?

What Happens if I Gain Weight after Liposuction? | Atlanta | BuckheadThe new body contours will be more or less permanent after liposuction cosmetic surgery. But if the patient gains a moderate amount of body weight (under ten pounds), their new figure will not change significantly. They would merely appear as a slightly larger version of the new body shape.

As long as the patient does not gain an excessive amount of body weight, they can enjoy their new body contours. There will undoubtedly be an impact on the body shape due to the natural process of aging. However, the results of the liposuction will still remain visible.

Plastic surgeon Dr. Paul McCluskey provides liposuction to patients in Atlanta, Buckhead, Georgia, and surrounding communities.

How Changes in Body Weight Affect the Figure

Good liposuction candidates usually maintain their body weight following the procedure and follow a balanced diet and exercise regimen.

The weight that a person puts on following liposuction will affect the appearance of their post-treatment figure. Patients should ideally weigh less after liposuction, at least by the amount of fat removed.

For instance, a patient who had an original body weight of 140 pounds and received liposuction surgery to eliminate six pounds of fat should weigh approximately 134 pounds following the procedure.

But if the patient puts on six pounds to weigh 140 pounds a few months after the liposuction, the cosmetic outcomes will still be appealing. However, they will appear sub-optimal.

In case a patient gains an additional ten pounds to weigh 150 pounds following liposuction surgery, the overall results will be negatively affected to a large extent. Patients who lack the dedication to maintain a stable body weight following lipo may not be suitable candidates for this procedure.

Fat Accumulation after Post-Liposuction Weight Gain

In case the patient puts on a significant amount of weight (ten pounds or above) following liposuction cosmetic surgery, the body will potentially produce fat. This fat must accumulate in different areas of the body. The new fat will usually deposit in various body areas in proportion to the number of fat cells in each site.

As a result, the liposuction treated areas will collect relatively lesser fat. However, the sites that are untreated by liposuction will accumulate significant deposits of fat.

For instance, in case the patient gains weight after liposuction of the hips, outer thighs, and abdomen, more new fat will deposit in areas such as the neck, upper arms, legs, back, face, and breast.

    Maintaining Body Weight Post-Liposuction

The surgeon will offer the patient instructions on following a balanced diet and exercise regimen after their liposuction procedure. The patient should only take gentle walks within their premises during the first one or two weeks after the surgery to improve blood flow.

In the following two to three weeks, they can progressively increase their activity level but without putting any pressure on the incisions.

In around one month, the incisions will heal completely. After that, the patient can undertake more vigorous exercises. They should consume a diet that comprises fruit, vegetables, and fiber while not including processed foods and saturated fat in their diet as much as possible.

Plastic surgeon Dr. Paul McCluskey receives patients from Atlanta, Buckhead, Georgia, and nearby areas for liposuction.

    Does liposuction produce permanent results?

Does liposuction produce permanent results? | Atlanta | BuckheadAfter liposuction plastic surgery, the patient’s new figure will be more or less permanent. If the patient puts on a moderate amount of weight following the surgery, their new figure will simply become a slightly bigger version of their new body shape.

Plastic surgeon Dr. Paul McCluskey provides liposuction to patients in Atlanta, Buckhead, Georgia, and surrounding locations.

    Permanent Fat Cell Reduction

Liposuction eliminates fat cells from the treated area for good, and these removed cells will not re-grow. The human body typically does not generate new fat cells, even when a person puts on a moderate amount of weight. This means that the fat cells removed by liposuction are permanently eliminated.

If the patient does not gain an excessive amount of weight, their new, sleeker body accomplished with liposuction will be permanent. But the patient should be aware that whatever fat cells remain in the body following liposuction can grow bigger in size if they put on a large amount of weight.

Patients should be aware that the natural process of aging will lead to normal changes in their body shape over the years. But as long as the patient maintains a balanced diet and regular exercise regimen, they can be assured that the cosmetic benefits of liposuction will sustain.

Pregnancy Impact after a Liposuction Surgery

Certain women may have concerns about the effects of their liposuction cosmetic surgery if they become pregnant in the future. Most patients can feel confident that pregnancy will not permanently change the body contouring results attained with liposuction.

If a woman undergoes liposuction, and subsequently becomes pregnant and puts on weight, gives birth, and then again loses the excess weight she put on during pregnancy, her original liposuction outcomes will return. For many patients, it will appear as if she has not been through a post-lipo surgery at all.

However, female liposuction cosmetic surgery candidates should ideally choose this procedure when they do not have any plans to become pregnant in the future.

Pregnancy can lead to cellulite, stretch marks, and sagging skin in the breast, abdominal, butt, and thigh areas, which are cosmetic concerns that are not related to liposuction.

Liposuction is meant to be a fat reduction and body contouring procedure that will improve the body shape. However, it does not have a significant effect on the elimination of stretch marks or cellulite, improving the quality of skin texture, or tightening sagging skin.

    Liposuction after Final Pregnancy

Certain women may develop stubborn fatty pockets in the abdominal area because of numerous pregnancies. In case a woman chooses to undergo liposuction after her final pregnancy, she can expect a dramatic improvement in the shape of her abdomen.

Many patients will be able to avoid the more invasive tummy tuck plastic surgery and attain a more defined and flatter abdomen with liposuction after their final pregnancy.

When do the outcomes become visible?

A majority of patients will be able to attain 90 percent of their final liposuction results in around three months after the procedure. The post-op inflammation will resolve gradually over several months depending on the type of liposuction technique used and extent of the surgery. After the inflammation subsides completely, the final outcomes of the liposuction surgery will become apparent.

    Rhinoplasty Surgery: Nasal Polyps

Rhinoplasty Surgery: Nasal Polyps | Atlanta Plastic SurgeryNasal polyps develop in many different sizes and colors. They typically range from brownish-yellow to pink in color. Initially, the polyps look like teardrops. But as they grow larger, they appear similar to grapes on a stem. Nasal polyps can occur in one or both nostrils and may grow alone or in clusters.

The patient can experience issues in breathing or a compromised sense of smell due to large polyps or polyp clusters. Nasal polyps can block the sinuses leading to recurrent infections.

Plastic surgeon Dr. Paul McCluskey provides rhinoplasty to patients in Atlanta, Buckhead, Georgia, and surrounding communities.

    Who may get Nasal Polyps?

Between four and 40 percent of the population have nasal polyps. They occur more commonly in men than in women. Individuals with nasal polyps usually develop them in their youth or middle-age.

People with recurrent sinus infections, asthma, and allergies are more likely to develop nasal polyps as are children with cystic fibrosis.

    Diagnosis

An experienced surgeon can diagnose nasal polyps typically just by asking the patient questions about their symptoms and assessing their nasal condition. They may use a lighted device to see the polyps within the nose.

Furthermore, the surgeon may order the below mentioned tests to confirm the diagnosis:

    • CT Scan
    • Nasal Endoscopy
    • Cystic fibrosis
    • Skin prick allergy test

    Treatment

    Steroid Nose Drops or Spray

To reduce the inflammation in the nasal polyps, the surgeon may prescribe nasal drops or a steroid spray to the patient. This is a common treatment for patients who have one polyp or a cluster of small polyps. The side effects of this treatment may include:

    • Headache
    • Nosebleeds
    • Sore throat

    Steroid Pills

The patient may require steroid pills if they have larger polyps or severe inflammation. The doctor may prescribe these pills by themselves or along with a nasal spray.

Steroids can effectively reduce the size of the polyps. However, they can pose complications such as weight gain. The patient should take these pills only for a few weeks and not a long duration.

    Other Medications

Sometimes, the surgeon may prescribe other medications to treat the underlying conditions that may be causing an aggravation of the swelling.

For instance, they may prescribe antihistamines to treat allergies, antifungal medicines to treat fungal allergies, and antibiotics to treat bacterial conditions.

    Surgery

If the polyps are substantial in size, or the patient is not responding to other treatments, the provider may recommend a surgical procedure to treat the polyps.

    Polypectomy

Polypectomy is a common procedure to remove polyps. The surgeon performs this procedure with the patient under either local or general anesthesia. In this procedure, the surgeon places a long, narrow pipe connected to a camera within the patient’s nose and sinuses.
