Breast augmentation is the most popular procedure for those wishing to enhance the shape or size of their breasts. Complications that arise from the use of breast implants are rare but still possible, with capsular contracture being a more serious case. In this event, the breast implant will need to be removed or replaced to avoid more severe health complications. Plastic surgeon Dr. Paul McCluskey provides breast implant removal and replacement to patients in Atlanta, Marietta, Georgia, and surrounding locations.
Signs of Capsular Contracture
Capsular contracture is more common with the use of silicone implants, however, may also occur with saline implants. After breast augmentation, the body naturally forms a capsule of scar tissue around the implant. Scar tissue normally remains soft and flexible, but sometimes becomes firm and tightens around the implant, causing capsular contracture. This can happen at any point after breast augmentation surgery, and may not even be noticeable to the patient for months or years. Signs of an encapsulated breast implant include:
- The breasts appear higher than they initially were
- Hardening, tightening, or pain in the breasts
- Deformed shape of the breasts
Capsular Contracture Grades
There are different stages of capsular contracture, with more progressed cases requiring more serious treatment. A physical examination is required to determine the type of capsular contracture occurring. The four grades of contracture include:
Grade I: Capsulation is indetectable, the breasts look and feel natural. Treatment is not required.
Grade II: The breasts feel slightly firm but still look natural. Massage and/or prescription medications may be recommended.
Grade III: The breasts feel firm and look deformed. Surgical intervention is required.
Grade IV: The breasts look severely deformed, feel firm, and are causing pain. Surgical intervention is required.
