Candidates for Muffin Top Liposuction
A person may be a good candidate for muffin top liposuction if they have a stubborn layer of extra fat around the abdomen area which they have been unable to eliminate through other methods, such as healthy eating and exercise.
Before any surgical procedure, the patient will have a consultation with one of the surgeons who will evaluate whether or not they are a suitable candidate for muffin top liposuction.
Muffin top liposuction candidates will need to:
- Be 18 years old or above
- Have a BMI under 30
- Be at a stable body weight
- Be a non-smoker, or be willing to discontinue smoking at least two weeks before the surgery and stop throughout the recovery duration.
Surgeons will encourage potential patients to lose as much weight as possible before the procedure. People with a BMI of over 30 will not be good candidates for this procedure.

What does Muffin Top Liposuction involve?
Muffin top liposuction can be undertaken using a local anesthetic where the patient will be conscious during the procedure but will not experience any pain or discomfort.
But some people are averse to being awake throughout a surgical procedure. In such cases, the patient will be given general anesthetic, and they will be asleep during the procedure.
Muffin top liposuction is commonly undertaken as an outpatient cosmetic surgery. Therefore, patients are able to return home on the day of the procedure itself, once the effects of the anesthesia subside.
In this procedure, the surgeon will inject a diluted local anesthetic solution into the surgical site, which is the abdomen in this instance. This causes the site to become swollen and firm, otherwise called tumescent.
Doing so causes the area to become numb so that the patient does not experience any pain or discomfort. This technique helps eliminate bleeding during the procedure. Therefore, there are fewer side effects after the procedure.
After this is done, the surgeon will place tiny incisions in the treatment area and insert a thin cannula, which then suctions out excess fat cells. After this is complete, the surgeon will seal the incisions and place a compression garment over the abdomen.
What will be the Recovery like?
After the procedure, it is normal to experience some inflammation and bruising as well as pain and discomfort. The surgeon may prescribe some pain medications to address these symptoms if necessary.
The patient will have to wear a compression garment for a few days, which will enable the abdomen to remain in shape. It will also reduce any inflammation reducing the recovery duration.
