    Preparing for Eyelid Surgery

Preparing for Eyelid Surgery | Atlanta Plastic Surgery | BuckheadPre-op preparation lays down the foundation for a successful eyelid surgery. The cosmetic surgeon will provide guidelines for a thorough preparation at the time of initial consultation. Patients who follow these guidelines and prepare well for the surgery will usually achieve safer and more predictable results and will have a quicker recovery.

Dr. Paul McCluskey is a committed plastic surgeon providing eyelid surgery and several other cosmetic and reconstructive procedures. Dr. McCluskey will address all the questions of the patients about preparation and give them tips to prepare for a safe surgery. Patients in Atlanta, Buckhead, Georgia, and other cities and communities in The Peach State have an opportunity to receive eyelid surgery from Dr. McCluskey.

    Weeks before the Surgery

Patients who smoke will be required to stop the habit for at least a few weeks prior to the eyelid procedure. The cosmetic surgeon may also advise the patient to reduce the use of alcohol or completely stop it for a few days before surgery. Smoking, in particularly, is a bigger hazard because nicotine can interfere with the oxygen flow in the blood and increase the risk of complications.

The patient will be instructed to avoid using certain nutritional and herbal supplements, including vitamin E and ginseng for a specified time period before the surgery. If they are taking blood thinning drugs such as aspirin, the surgeon will advise them to stop its use for a few days or weeks in order to minimize the risk of bleeding during the surgery.

The surgeon may alter the schedule of certain prescription medications of the patient in consultation with the physician. Safer alternatives may be recommended for certain drugs and supplements. Hard working and superlative plastic surgeon Dr. McCluskey receives patients from Atlanta, Buckhead, Georgia, and nearby areas for eyelid surgery and various other procedures of the breast, body, and face.

    Pre-Surgery Arrangements

Before the scheduled eyelid surgery, the patient can arrange for a few basic things to help ensure a smoother recovery. They may stock up a few essential items at home in advance, including:

    • Clean washcloths
    • Clean bowl for cold water
    • Ice cubes
    • Plastic bags for ice packs
    • Bottle of artificial tears
    • Sterile gauze pads
    • Extra pillows to keep the head raised
    • Groceries for a few days

The patient should arrange for transportation to return home comfortably after the eyelid surgery. If required, they may also arrange for aftercare for a few days or have a family member stay at home for assistance.

On the day before the surgery, the patient should rest adequately. If the procedure involves general anesthesia, they will be required to avoid eating or drinking for about eight hours prior to the surgery.

    The Day of Surgery

The patient should follow a few simple tips on the day of the surgery:

    • Thoroughly wash hair and eyebrows
    • Avoid using facial makeup
    • Do not wear jewelry, piercings, false eyelashes or contact lenses to the surgery center
    • Wear comfortable, loose fitting clothes

Diabetics should have their vital parameters checked on the morning of the surgery.
